Ideally suited for mountain bikers, trail runners, hikers or 4×4 enthusiasts
You can cycle or drive through the farm or along the farm roads through the lucern fields, and there are plenty of wonderful routes to choose for walks.
Duration: 5 hour hike or 1 hour drive Distance: 30km
This trail is more suited to mountain bikes, runners or by vehicle. Setting off out of Knowsley turn right then go for 11km turn left, Blanco turn right then left at 14.4km at Newstead follow road to main road turn left back to Knowsley.
Duration: 3hour drive or a three hour hike (4×4 vehicle) Distance: 20km
Setting off from Knowsley take left & then right at T-Junction to bowling green where you turn right & walk in a north-westerly direction. On route you will most probably pass camps with sheep and lambs or cattle, in the valley there is always a herd of black wildebeest, baboons can also be spotted or heard barking on the opposite hillside, if you lucky you can spot group of Vaal Rhebuck ,then you will start the long ascent uphill to the top of a mountain ridge, where you can stop for a break, the views are spectacular, on a clear day you can see a far as the Sneeuberg also views to the west of the mountains near Cradock and Commando Drift Nature Reserve. You will set off on your return journey in an easterly direction, following the top of the ridge, on the winding ascent in the valley below you will spot a herd of white and common blesbuck and grey mountain reedbuck. You will then join up with the track you had walked earlier and head back to Knowsley Cottage over cultivated fields.

Departing from Knowsley you will go over the grid take sharp left though a gate leading down cultivated Lucerne lands at the poplar bush approximately 5km later you will turn right then proceed till you come to a farm gate then turn right onto a gravel that will lead you back to Knowsley.
Eland Trail 1
Duration: 40min drive of 3hour hike Distance: 18.5km
Departing from Knowsley going over grid you will turn left onto road 500 metres you turn left through a gate 7km later turn right onto farm track then turn right again past Summer Hill farm to road take right again back to Knowsley.
Eland Trail 2 (red/orange/red)
Duration: 25min drive of 2hour hike Distance: 13km
Departing from Knowsley going over grid you will turn left onto road 500 metres you turn left through a gate 5.3km later turn right onto orange trail follow farm track past sheep kraals and take right again on road back to Knowsley.
Rhebuck 1 (brown/ochre/ brown)
Duration: 2hour drive or 2hour 30 minutes hike Distance: 15km
Departing from Knowsley Cottage, take a right & follow the light blue trail towards Tarkastad for about 800 metres then right through a farm gate and head in an easterly direction. Follow the track till you get to another gate the track winds its way up to the top of a ridge which you will follow for 3.7 kilometres take the right fork past a small dam & in between two koppies follow this track for 5.5km through two gates which are close together take the right track after second gate and you start your decent where you overlook the Fair View Big Dam onto red hike back to lower lying pastures and cultivated lands. then follow the yellow route back to Knowsley.
Rhebuck 2 (brown)
Duration: 3hr drive or 4 hr hike Distance: 24km
Departing from Knowsley Cottage, follow Rhebuck 1 (brown trial) at 5.5km where you go through two gates close together carry on straight & follow this track to a point where you overlook, what was a section of the old Ciskei & Ntabatembu Mountain and the mountains surrounding Queenstown in the distance. Groups of Grey mountain reedbuck will be spotted along the way From this point you will proceed a little further along the ridge and then wind your way down in southerly direction in the distance you will see the Winterberg range (2400 metre) and back to lower lying pastures and cultivated lands. then follow the yellow route back to Knowsley, elevation; starting at 1440m and ascending to 1700m.
Rhebuck 3 (brown/lime green/red)
Duration: 3hr drive or 4 hr hike Distance: 24km
Departing from Knowsley Cottage, follow Rhebuck 2 (brown trial) at 7.5km as you start descent take left through farm gate & follow track at back to the 13.5km start descent down to Glen Fergus Groups of Grey mountain reedbuck will be spotted along the way then follow the red route back to Knowsley, elevation; starting at 1440m and ascending to 1700m.
MARY AND MARTHA HIKE (Brown /Purple)
Duration: 3 hour hike. Distance: 17km
Departing from Knowsley Cottage, take a right & follow the road to Tarkastad for about 800 metres then right off through a farm gate and head in an easterly direction. Follow the track till you get to another gate the track winds its way up to the top of a ridge which you will follow for 3.7 kilometres depart from brown trial go straight through gate & follow track till meet a fence follow fence in westerly direction to bottom of Martha get through fence & go along the side of Martha in North Easterly direction till one gets to path that ascends to top of Martha When you at top take note of spot for your decent Enjoy the panoramic view of Tarkastad in North & walk to beacon in the West where you can overlook Knowsley.
Duration: 5 hour hike down
